As I promised, Rachel followed up the Dadaab background piece with an excellently written and informative account of her visit to Dadaab last week. The full blog entry is available at http://rachelgoestokenya.blogspot.com/2009/07/women-in-dadaab-refugee-camp.html
She noted prevalent issues facing women at the Dadaab camp and the steps being taken to combat them, including:
- Gender based violence stemming from factors such as stigmatization, lack of female police officers, incidences of rape when women travel to fetch firewood, and domestic violence.
- Female Genital Mutilation surpassing 96%
- Health issues facing women such as poor maternal health, lack of sanitary pads, and gaps in the provision of mental health and psychosocial services
- Lack of girls’ education
